Originally St. John’s Episcopal Church, this historic Auburn landmark traces its roots to 1868, when General John H. Chedell donated the land for a church to serve the growing community. Following his death, Chedell left a generous bequest toward the construction of the magnificent Gothic Revival church that opened in 1881. As the parish grew, an adjoining school and parish hall were added to the property. More than a century later, the church and school were purchased by Mary Anne Giacona in 2006 and given new purpose as The Center. The former school became home to The Center’s wellness facilities and the intimate Gathering Room, while restoration of the historic sanctuary began in 2013, revealing its original vaulted ceilings, mahogany details, quatrefoils, stained glass, and remarkable architectural character. Today, the restored sanctuary is home to The Cathedral Room, giving The Center two distinctive settings for weddings, gatherings, and special celebrations.
